Portfolio

A portfolio is the complete collection of financial assets held by an investor, such as stocks, bonds, fund units, and cash. Its composition — the weights assigned to each asset class and security — determines the portfolio’s overall risk and return profile. In Egypt, investors’ securities are recorded centrally with Misr for Central Clearing, Depository and Registry (MCDR).
Example
A portfolio might hold a money market fund for a near-term commitment, an equity fund for money that can stay a decade, and a cash reserve — three holdings answering three different questions.
Why it matters
The portfolio, not any single holding, is what actually determines your outcome. A position that looks reckless alone can be sensible as a small part of a whole, and the reverse is equally true.
A common mistake
Judging each holding on its own performance. The right question is what a holding does for the portfolio — something that falls when everything else rises may be doing exactly its job.
