Stock
سهم
A stock, or share, is a security that represents a unit of ownership in a company. Shareholders participate in the company’s profits through dividends and in changes to its value through the share price. On the Egyptian Exchange (EGX), listed company shares are bought and sold in Egyptian pounds during official trading sessions.
Example
If a company has issued 1,000,000 shares and you hold 10,000, you own one per cent of it — one per cent of its profits when they are distributed, and one per cent of any vote at a general assembly.
Why it matters
Owning a share means your return comes from two separate places: the dividends the company chooses to pay, and the change in the price others will pay for the share. Those two can move in opposite directions in the same year.
A common mistake
Treating the share price as the company's value. Price is per share, so a 5 EGP share is not cheaper than a 500 EGP share until you know how many shares exist — market capitalisation is the figure that answers that.
