Stamp Duty on Trades
ضريبة الدمغة على التداول
Stamp duty is a small tax levied on the value of stock-exchange transactions in Egypt, charged to both buyer and seller at rates set by law and typically collected automatically by the broker. It is separate from any capital-gains tax and from brokerage commissions, and it is one of the transaction costs an EGX investor should factor into net returns.
Example
On a transaction the duty is applied to the value traded and collected by the broker alongside commission, so it appears in the contract note rather than being paid separately.
Why it matters
It is a cost that applies to the trade itself regardless of whether you made a profit, which means frequent trading multiplies it in a way a buy-and-hold approach does not.
A common mistake
Confusing it with tax on gains. The two are separate charges with different bases, and rates and exemptions are set by law and change — confirm the current position with the tax authority or your broker.
